The Life Of Ian Fleming by David Leigh

Following six movies with Sean Connery as James Bond, Live And Let Die would create a brand new Bond. It was the wisecracking Roger Moore who was going to be the new face of the worlds most famous secret agent.
Roger Moore actually got of to a pretty rough start with Live And Let Die. The fans had difficult to accept the new style that he brought into the Bond character. In addition Live And Let Die was, in many peoples eyes, one of the worst Bond movies. The only thing that is remembered by the fans, is the title track "Live and Let Die", written by Paul and Linda McCartney.
The movie itself takes a new direction compared to the earlier Bond movies. 007 has to take on a new breed of villain, the conscienceless Dr. Kananga. Kananga is the ruler of a small Caribbean island who is a guy who tries to be a monopolistic heroin supplier. Bond is sent on an investigation when three British agents are murdered. He gets help in his old friend Felix Leiter. The search for Kananga starts in New Orleans, and the investigation leads Bond to Kananga's hideout on the Caribbean island. On the island he discovers that Kananga's evil secret is a virgin tarot expert who is able to see the future named Solitaire. After some struggle and smart thinking, Bond does what he knows best, and she can't see the future anymore.
Back in New Orleans, 007 is on the heels of the evil dr. Kananga, trying to figure out what he is really up to. After some sneaking, shooting and some more of that tricky Bond stuff, he discovers that he has two tons of heroin.
Roger Moore seems to have some problems fitting into the role as Bond the first time around. It feels like he is trying to be one of the older Bonds instead of himself. It should be mentioned that he doesn't have the easiest of jobs. The movie has many shortcomings. Too long and boring scenes(we should be used to long chases in Bond movies, but the boat chase in this one, is insanely long), no real villain like in the other Bonds, and an uninteresting evil plan makes for hard working conditions for Roger Moore.
Even though this movie has a lot of lacks, the one thing that disappoints me the most is that Q and his gadgets fails to make an impact on the movie. Personally that has been one of my favorite parts of some of the other Bond movies.
